ONE FANTASTIC MOMENT

ONE FANTASTIC MOMENT

Screen Shot 2014-04-22 at 9.08.11 AMMost of us are thrilled when we make par.  We look back at the round and think: not a bad round.  I did have a par on 7.  Well,  as a pro there are mostly pars and many birdies.  But those birdies are not that easy, not even for the pros.  Picture Matt Kuchar this past weekend at the RBC Heritage tournament down to the last 2 holes.  He has a beautiful tee shot on the par 3.  Weren’t you thinking how great it would be to hit a shot like that?  I was. Then, the most unusual thing happened.  He had a 4 foot putt that perhaps you thought was a definite birdie. I did. But Matt missed it and then missed it again on the way back .  Did you have any idea that the winds were so strong that it could affect a putt in that way?  I didn’t. I never would have thought so.  For Matt this bogey may have lost him the tournament.  He showed such great sportsmanship.  It appeared that he drank the poison medicine and moved on.  I know that he had to be extremely disappointed but he showed no physical signs.  He stood tall and approached the 18th tee.  As luck would have it he found himself in a greenside bunker.  What do you think he was thinking at this point?  I was nervous for him.  I wanted him to have a great shot after suffering on the 17th.   I imagine that he knew Luke Donald was coming down the course behind him just needing a single birdie to force a playoff.  He had to make par on 18 and think that Luke Donald would present him with a tie or maybe Luke would birdie one of the last few holes and Matt would have to settle with second place after scoring 8 birdies on Sunday, a fantastic round.  In an incredible moment Matt held himself together.  He hit a lovely bunker shot (I wish I could do that), it hit the green and continued to roll all the way into the cup.   The spectators rose in their seats and the roar was enormous.  That must have been ONE FANTASTIC MOMENT for Matt Kuchar.  Did you enjoy it too?
